While starting a career in cosmetic teeth whitening is often both rewarding and lucrative, this may not be an option for existing dental professionals.
Dental professionals, such as hygienists and assistants, in Canada are generally not permitted to perform teeth whitening services outside of a dental clinic while they are actively licensed (or are not self-governing). This means that if you are a dental professional in Canada and you want to offer teeth whitening services, you must do so within the confines of a dental clinic.
There may be some exceptions to this rule, depending on the specific regulations in your province or territory. For example, some jurisdictions may allow dental professionals to perform teeth whitening services at trade shows or other events, as long as certain conditions are met. Some jurisdictions also allow hygienists a much larger scope of flexibility and freedom where they can even open their own clinics with specific hygienic services!.
It’s important for dental professionals in Canada (and the United States) to double-check with their licensing or governing board to ensure they are permitted to perform services outside of a dental clinic. Failing to do so could result in disciplinary action, such as fines or loss of license.
While the rules and regulations surrounding teeth whitening may vary by jurisdiction, it’s always a good idea for dental professionals to err on the side of caution and seek guidance from their licensing board before offering any new services. By doing so, you can ensure that you are providing safe, high-quality care to your clients while also following the rules and regulations set out by your profession.
I am not actively licensed, can I still do this?!
